The Kinect depth camera data used in both the CareBot and the SafePath wheelchair is processed by a piece of software called GeckoImager, running on a dual core 1.66GHz Intel Atom motherboard. The navigation is handled by two other GeckoSavants, GeckoNav and GeckoSuper, running on a separate dual core Atom machine. Both computers were located on the robot during the video.
Final versions of SafePath navigation will use OEM depth cameras manufactured to GeckoSystems specifications to create economical indoor and outdoor capabilities for the wheelchair and the CareBot.
For more robust applications such as the automobilie or agricultural machinery, LIDAR, radar, sonar, and machine vision or a combination of systems can be sensor fused fused for input to GeckoImager.
In 2012 the German magazine INSPECT published a technical article on the use of Kinects in SafePath navigation in the Wheelchair and the CareBot.
